The Bowen Technique is a remarkable tool to very effectively rebalance the nervous system. The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The latter is divided into the parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous systems (SNS). The PNS controls salivation, lacrimation, urination, defecation and digestion. It is the rest and relax system. The SNS is the fight or flight response. This comes into play during moments of stress and releases a flood of chemicals and hormones that support tension in muscles and the adrenaline rush.
Unfortunately, many of us are caught in a vicious cycle of the SNS-unable to relax and destress. The symptoms manifest as difficulty sleeping, indigestion, headaches and migraines, muscle aches and eventually become chronic conditions. The majority of patients in my clinic are stuck in this fight or flight mode.
Bowen is able to tap directly into the parasympathetic nervous system and increases the vagal tone causing calm and relaxation. In this mode, the body is able to rest and heal. During a Bowen session, tummy rumbling is very common. This is an indication of the PNS at work and is a very good sign.
Once the nervous system is re balanced, the body can then heal itself and it does so very well. I believe the success of Bowen in treating so many different conditions is down to its action on the nervous system. This is especially evident when treating babies. Symptoms ranging from indigestion, reflux, constipation and inability to sleep disappear after sometimes just one session.
